The Centre of Lisbon life... Situated at the edge of the River Tejo is Lisbon’s grandest square, the Praça do Comércio, a symbol of Portugal’s once unrivalled power and influence. Before 1755, the fine royal Ribeira Palace was located in this area, but was subsequently obliterated by a tsunami that accompanied a great earthquake. Not only was the Palace destroyed, but with it a royal library of about 20,000 books, including a huge collection of classical Portuguese literature. The whole of the Baixa neighbourhood was destroyed as well. After the earthquake, The Praça do Comércio was built. The renowned Joaquim Machado de Castro sculpted the statue of King José I riding his horse, which lies right in the centre. Indeed, it was this regent's reign that oversaw the reconstruction of Lisbon, with the politician, the Marquês de Pombal, whose image appears on the bronze emblem on the front of the pedestal, instrumental in the process. At the river edge, expeditions set out to the various colonies of the Portuguese empire. After returning and docking, newly acquired foreign wares were sold the through this Commercial Square, which was housed in by yellow painted buildings.
