1991 marks the beginning of a very happy Portuguese-German relationship that started in Berlin during our three-year training to become travel agents. After successfully completing the training, we spent several years gaining valuable experience at specialist travel agencies in Berlin and Lisbon. Eight years later, we took one of our Lisbon friends up on his offer to buy his apartment in Lapa. Having renovated as well as having carefully decorated and furnished the apartment, we regularly spent the winter months in Lisbon with our young daughter. During this time, we developed a keen interest in historic building features, design objects and the restoration of antiques. This became a tremendous success giving us the opportunity to turn what we love into a profitable business. We have been offering our lovingly restored and furnished apartments to our guests since January 2007 – with excellent feedback. Note: There is no elevator in our old town house and the stairs are quite steep. If you have mobility problems we would not recommend this property. For 300 years, Lapa was a favourite summer holiday destination for the English aristocracy. Today the atmosphere of that bygone, elegant age is to be found in the streets and squares where there are some magnificent examples of various architectural styles. Our apartments are well placed for local shops with some excellent bakeries, a couple of small supermarkets and a very convenient wine merchant’s. Eating out is no problem as there are any number of cafes, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets and all within easy walking distance. It’s not surprising that Lapa is also home to some of Lisbon’s finest museums, churches and public gardens. A short walk to the north of our apartment is the grandiose baroque Basilica Estrela and the famous Jardim da Estrela. A little way to the south is the Museum of Ancient Art with its fine view of the harbour and docks. A wander through the streets with their old villas and palaces interspersed with small, old established businesses and shops, many with their original décor and facades, is perfect for an evening stroll before dinner.
