The Masseria Palombara Grande was built in 1776 above an ancient underground oil-mill, at the heart of a centuries-old olive grove in the Marina of Ostuni - the magnificent territory sloping from Ostuni hills to the Adriatic Sea - and takes its name from the Apulian word ‘palombaia’, dovecot, a small construction towering on the main building, where white doves nested in the ancient days and still nest nowadays. The entire structure is made of rock and stone and is whitewashed as Ostuni, the "White Town": the view of the city from the Masseria is breathtaking, as the unexpected view of the sea glazing against the olive trees. At the centre of the property, the ancient oil mill and the small rural church built in 1789. The rooms in the ancient stables, as the entire structure, express the authenticity and the original features of the few Apulian masserie left unspoiled. A karst "lama" runs across the land: this distinctive feature, a deep opening in the ground, in which lentisco, blueberry and wild olive plants have grown, is typical of the Apulian countryside. Alongside the lama, there are numerous caves, used in the past by the fishermen of the nearby Villanova.
We consider ourselves immensely lucky to have inherited this extraordinary place so, even if each of us has his own job in a different field, we have decided to share with other people - looking for the most genuine Apulia, breathtaking in its essential authenticity - the special - almost out of this word - atmosphere of history, breeze, sun, colors, smells and uncontaminated nature of our masseria.
The Masseria Palombara Grande is located on the Via Traiana, an ancient route that connected Brindisi to Rome: walk, bike or horse-ride along this route, discover the countryside and its monumental old-century olive trees along the Adriatic coast; visit San Michele Arcangelo crypt and its Byzantine mosaic; enjoy the sun and the sea of the Mediterranean coast. From our location, in the middle of Apulia, you can easily reach and visit: Lecce, the baroque capital of the territory known as Salento at the most south eastern of Italy's heel; Gallipoli, the queen of the 'Basso Ionio' located on the west coast of the Salento; Otranto and the Adriatic coast of the low Salento; Monopoli, the unique city overlooking the Med; Polignano a Mare, the delicious sea-town with its grottoes and caverns; Carovigno, San Vito dei Normanni, San Michele Salentino, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino, Fasano, the towns of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Route 'Collina di Brindisi'; Alberobello, Cisternino, Martina Franca and the Valle d'Itria or Valley of the Trulli; the 8 official wine routes, or Strade del Vino, heading towards Brindisi and Taranto from Bari, with 80 recommended wineries.
