We renovated Hillside Cottage from it's former life as a traditional Achill cottage, and opened it in October 2014. We have attempted to retain as much as possible the original features and character, while creating a modern, cosy, and relaxing home, with all the comforts and conveniences you could need. The cottage is located behind our old house, sharing a driveway, but with it's own garden, patio and parking. It's elevated site provides beautiful views of Achill Sound and Currane mountain on the mainland. Whatever your holiday - be it a romantic getaway, an active and adventurous exploration of the island, a quiet retreat, or fun-filled quality time with your family or friends - we aim to provide you with all you could wish for to make the most of your stay in Achill and the people you share that time with.

To get the most out of Achill we recommend you try at least one of our favourites: surf or body-board on Keel beach; walk a local trail - no matter the weather - wet walks are best followed by cosy pub firesides; take a guided sea-kayaking tour of the coast off Dugort; pier-jump at the small pier; kite-surf, paddle-board or kayak on Keel lake; listen to a live traditional music session; explore and learn about some of Achill's historical or archeological sites - the Deserted Village, the shark fishing locations, Kildownet Cemetery or Grainneuaile's Castle; cycle the Greenway or a local trail; discover Achill's connections to literature or art; horse ride on the beach; take a day trip to Clare island and walk to the Abbey; build a sandcastle; swim in the sea; visit the aquarium and visitor centre; eat fresh crab claws; drive to the top of Minaun and walk out to the statue for the wind and view; walk the length of Keel beach; go boat fishing; watch a yawl race; have coffee and cake in The Cottage; hike to the old coastguard lookout at Keem before a swim at the beach; hike the Coffin Trail... there's so much more!!!

Hillside Cottage is located on the Wild Atlantic Way in the village of Shraheens, just over one mile from the main village of Achill Sound. Our location in the quieter southern part of the island is a fantastic benefit for those interested in exploring Achill's diversity and beauty, particularly those interested in sightseeing while cycling or walking. The cottage is only one mile from supermarkets and other main services, as well as the bridge to the mainland, making it a great base for guests who wish to explore outside of Achill also. The closest pubs are both one mile away. At only one mile to the Greenway, it is the ideal base for guests who are arriving by bicycle from Westport or intending to cycle the Greenway during their stay. The closest beaches, which are suitable for sea-kayaking, swimming, off-lead dog-walking and sandcastle-building, are both a five minute drive. Other activities and attractions within a few minutes drive include the boat to Clare Island, Grace O'Malley's castle, the Grainne Mhaol hiking trail and pier-jumping. The popular surf and activity beaches, lake and golf courses are a 20 minute drive.
