Built in the 1800's, La Maison Balnéaire is the last remaining house on the island that still retains it's decorative wooden fascia, typical of seaside architecture of this region. This unique feature, plus the pair of symmetrical steps leading to the entrance of this double fronted house, create a stunning façade hidden behind tall black gates. The courtyard has plenty of space for bikes, and outside furniture for dining. A barbecue is provided, try grilling some fresh fish from the fishmongers at La Noue (1km), and a glass of the Ile de Ré sparkling wine, Trousse Chemise, named after the beach at the top of the island. The house has 3 bedrooms and can sleep up to 6 people very comfortably.

We love the beaches on the Ile de Ré, the local beach for it's rock pools and ecluses - ancient walls built into the sea-bed in the shape of a horseshoe, to catch fish when the tide is out. For swimming, we like the Bois-Plage beaches, just a 10 minute drive. We love eating on the island, Chai Pepette, just round the corner, for a glass of wine and a plate of charcuterie/oysters - or something more substantial. If you are looking for haute cuisine, the restaurant L'Atalante, down by the sea, has a gourmet menu and sea view.

Sainte Marie is a tranquil village compared to St Martin or La Flotte, but has all the local amenities - restaurants, bike hire, boulangerie, market, supermarket, office de tourisme within walking distance. The beach is a 10-15 minute stroll through vineyards, and you may see the little field of crocus where the saffron is farmed. In the opposite direction to the sea are the woods, for woodland walks, bird-spotting and mushroom hunting. There is a Thalassotherapy centre at Sainte Marie, which often has good deals that you can ask about at the Tourist Information Office, Place Antioche. Free shuttle bus between the house and La Noue, 1 km away, with more restaurants, deli and fishmongers.
