What used to be the entire city of roman Barcelona is now the oldest and one of the most central neighborhoods in Barcelona: the Sants (or Saints) neighborhood. The combined Sants-Montjuïc neighborhood is the largest of Barcelona, around 21km2. A with a very diverse population, the 30,000 inhabitants of the area represent about 20% of the Barcelona township. Barcelona's train station, Sants Estació, is located in the Sants area. It is mainly residential, with few attractions. Sants, however, is quite central and public transport couldn't be better. Most of the city's metro lines stop at Sants Estació. Plaça Espanya and Montjuic mountain are only a 5 minute walk from the central station. Plaça Espanya is a beautiful square and home to Barcelona's FIRA exhibition centre. Located here is the magical fountain of Montjuic, which combines sound, light and water. Right above the fountain, on the edge of the mountain of Montjüic, stands a powerful building: the Palau Nacional, which today contains the Catalan National Art Museum (MNAC). The view from here is spectacular. Next to the Palau Nacional there is the Spanish village, Poble Espanyol. This village, founded in 1929 for the World's Fair, is an outdoor museum where you can find architecture and crafts from all different parts of Spain. Further up are the Olympic stadium and the basketball arena Palau Sant Jordi, built for the Olympics in 1992. It was here on Montjuic that the inauguration ceremony for the Olympic Games was held.
